Sports Injuries

At Jamie Bell Physiotherapy we see a large number of patients who suffer with sports related injuries. Due to our excellent reputation we provide physiotherapy for local sports teams and have good affiliation with a number of different sports clubs. All the physiotherapists at Jamie Bell Physiotherapy have a large amount of experience and expert knowledge in sports rehabilitation, aiding people to recovery after injury. The physiotherapists at Jamie Bell Physiotherapy have a large experience working with elite sport, specifically for Leeds United, Bradford Bulls RLFC, Keighley Cougars RLFC, Huddersfield Town FC, Bradford and Bingley RUFC and Morley RUFC. Whether the patient plays sport to a high standard or they just enjoy sport socially, the physiotherapist can guide the patient back to completing their sport to their pre injury level. It is important for the physiotherapist to ensure that the player is fit to return to sport after suffering an injury and they do not return too soon. This is a common issue with athletes and it is important to get professional advice from the physiotherapist with regards to returning to sport. It is important to give the injury sufficient time to repair before predisposing the tissue to extra stress.

Before returning to sport the physiotherapist can guide you through a structured rehabilitation program. This will focus on restoring muscle strength, joint stability and slowly introducing sport specific training to ensure the injured tissue can meet the demands of the activity and verifying the player as fit to return to sport. The physiotherapists at Jamie Bell Physiotherapy can also prescribe fitness plans for patients as well as provide advice with specific strength and conditioning exercises, improving the patient's strength and stability to reduce the risk of further injury.

Due to the high demands sport places on the body, injuries are very common which can be extremely frustrating for an athlete. It is extremely important to gain professional advice from a physiotherapist who has experience in treating sports injuries to ensure you do no cause further damage and prolong the time out of competiton or your chosen activity. Sports injuries can include ligament sprains, muscle tears, joint dislocations and subluxations, fractured bones, cartilage tears (meniscus damage), tendinitis, tendonopathy, sportsmans hernias, tennis elbow, golfers elbow, rotator cuff damage, plantarfasciitis, intervertebral disc prolapse, facet joint injury, haematoma's and concussion to name a few!

Certain risk factors can predispose athletes to sports injuries, whether this is poor biomechanics (pronation at the feet, excessive curvature (lordosis) at the spine), poor joint range of movement, poor joint stability, stiffness at the spine or excessive repetition with certain sporting skills (tennis swing, golf swing). However it may also be that the player suffered a freak accident causing a muscle tear or fracture to a bone that could not be avoided. Either way, at Jamie Bell Physiotherapy we can discover the route of the problem, develop a treatment program to treat the injury and reduce the risk of further injury.

How can Physiotherapy help following an injury in sport?

Physiotherapy is used throughout the sporting world to provide athletes and teams with specialised treatment and assessment skills. At Jamie Bell Physiotherapy we will complete a thorough assessment in order to determine what may be causing the injury or pain and develop a treatment program accordingly. It may be that the athlete has suffered an injury that needs a period of immobilisation (joint dislocation, fractured bone, muscle tear, rotator cuff tear, athroscopic surgery), in which case the physiotherapist can liasise with the athletes surgeon (if needed) and guide the athlete through a structured rehabilitation protocol.

At Jamie Bell Physiotherapy we can also provide patients with orthotics to correct pronation at the feet, improving lower limb biomechanics and reducing the risk of running injuries (Achilles tendonopathy, plantarfasciitis, illiotibial band friction syndrome, low back pain).
